What to Expect

What the Forty-Sixers expect from climbers and what climbers should expect from the Forty-Sixers.

As soon as a climber thinks they want to become a Forty-Sixer they should write to us, Adirondack Forty-Sixers, PO Box 9046, Schenectady, NY 12309-9046.

When the climber’s letter is received a file is opened for the climber.  The climber is assigned a correspondent.  The original letter is placed in the climber’s file and a copy is sent to the assigned correspondent.  The correspondent will send a personal reply along with some useful information.  The correspondent will act as a mentor in the tradition of Grace Hudowalski and a dialog is started.

Climbers should write to their correspondent periodically and report their climbs. Because of the number of climbers we correspond with we ask that letters be limited to every few climbs so we can “keep up” with our correspondence.  Aspiring Forty-Sixers may wish to subscribe to our Peeks Magazine (order form is on the Forty-Sixer web page.  Once you become a Forty-Sixer, your subscription is part of your dues.

When the correspondent feels their climber is nearing completion of climbing the Forty-Six peaks a questionnaire and official list of mountains will be sent to the climber.  Upon completion of climbing all Forty-Six peaks the questionnaire and official mountain list must be filled out completely and accurately and returned to the Office of the Historian.  The climber’s name as it is appears on the questionnaire will be printed on the certificate of accomplishment.  After the questionnaire and mountain list is returned the climber is officially recorded as an Adirondack Forty-Sixer and their correspondent will send the climber a letter of congratulations.

The office will send the climber a packet containing:

A letter of congratulations from the Office of the Historian

The latest copy of Peeks the Forty-Sixer Magazine

            The Forty-Sixer By-Laws

            Merchandise order forms

Dues notice.  Only Forty-Sixers whose dues are current may order merchandise. (patches, shirts and etc.)  Dues are $8 a year and active members automatically receive Peeks Magazine and the three yearly Newsletters.

All questionnaires and mountain lists MUST be received in the Office of the Historian by January 31 in order to obtain a climbing number for the previous year(s).

The office will assign climbing numbers around February 1.Numbers are assigned in the order of finish for climbs completed by December 31.  Anyone sending in paperwork after the January 31 deadline will have to wait for the following year to obtain a number.  About mid February the new Forty-Sixers will receive a letter with their assigned number, asking for any corrections of name and address and giving the date and place of the Forty-Sixer Spring meeting where certificates of accomplishment will be presented. The letter should be expected in the middle of February.   For those not able to attend, certificates will be mailed.   The meeting is usually held at the Crowne Plaza in Lake Placid on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend.

Sometime in the early spring a newsletter will be sent out containing the exact details of the Spring Meeting.  Included in the letter is a reservation form for the dinner.

The dinner is usually about $22.00 to $24.00 per person.
