(preliminary)

BUSINESS MEETING FALL 2009

Saturday, October 3, 2009

Keene Central School, Keene Valley, New York

CALL TO ORDER, INTRODUCTIONS, ANNOUNCEMENTS

The meeting was called to order by President Tom Wheeler at 7:30 PM. Tom extended thanks to the Keene Central School Class of 2010 for excellent food and entertainment. Jim introduced members of the 46ers Executive Committee in attendance, along with L. John Van Norden of the 46ers Conservation Trust. He also acknowledged the past 46er Presidents who are here this evening: George Sloan; Mary Lou Recor; Barb Harris; Nancy Allen; Phil Corell; and Jim Barnshaw.

FOUNDERS AWARD PATCH PRESENTATIONS

Vice President Sally Hoy explained the origin of the Founders Award Patch, instituted by former President Jim Barnshaw to acknowledge exceptional service to the 46ers over a minimum three year period. Sally then presented awards to Pat Desbiens #5109 and Peggy MacKellar #2857W.

TREASURER’S REPORT

Phil Corell explained that 46er dues are set at a level sufficient to cover the essential costs of running the organization, with little to spare. It is donations from members and other supporters, which this year totaled about $19,500, that support the activities the 46ers undertake, including donations for such purposes as the pre-season trail sweep, educational activities, lean-to rehabilitation, and so forth. Between $12,000 and $13,000 of this year’s donations was in small amounts (less than $50), reflecting very broad support. There were 3733 dues-paying members this year.

A suggestion was made from the floor, that donors should take advantage of the fact that many employers will make matching contributions to a charitable organization.

REPORT OF THE OFFICE OF THE HISTORIAN

Tony Solomon reported that 1836 pieces of correspondence were processed in the year. He acknowledged the valuable contributions of the correspondents.

PEEKS

Melissa and Daniel Eagan reiterated an earlier request for articles, especially about any mishaps that occurred while hiking.

TRAILMASTERS

Len Grubbs reported 1,190 hours of trail maintenance took place, including blowdown removal, side cutting, cleaning drainage devices, trail hardening, water bars and water channels, and a privy in the Pharaoh Lake area. Much tough carrying was needed, and the assistance of many volunteers.

Len presented Conservation Award Patches to the following:

For 746 hours:  Jane O’Connell #2148 and Gerhard Weber #2615;

For 546 hours: Ken Ryba #1661W;

For 346 hours: Wanda Davenport #3495;

For 46 hours: Mark Simpson #6038, Scott Rasnake #5261, Chris Sekellick #5566, and Dennis Crispo #2882W.

Sam Eddy paid tribute to Len Grubbs, upon completion of fifteen years of trail maintenance.

Russ Guard acknowledged the importance of 46er trail maintenance, and emphasized the message with a $1,000 donation, which Len Grubbs accepted with thanks on behalf of the 46ers.
