The Adirondack Forty-Sixers Spring 2008
Meeting Minutes
Annual Spring Business Meeting
May 25, 2008
Crowne Plaza Hotel
Lake Placid, NY
CALL TO ORDER,
INTRODUCTIONS, AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
The meeting was called to
order at 7:30
PM by President Jim
Barnshaw. Jim welcomed all to the
meeting including over 100 new 46ers from the 2007 class. Jim then noted that
this was the 60th anniversary of the club,
and with 248 new finishers this year, there are now more than 6,000 recorded
46ers. Special thanks were given to Tony Solomon and the correspondents, Sherri Martin and Pam Keida for their work at the front desk, and to Doug Arnold for the pictures.
Jim then acknowledged past 46er presidents who were in attendance at the
meeting: Mary Lou Recor, Nancy Allen, Tim Tefft, Joe Urbanczyk, and Winnie
Lamb. The Executive Committee members
present were then introduced. In
closing, Jim mentioned highlights of the Executive Committee board meeting,
which included approval of a Conflict of Interest policy, and approval of
$6,000 for the ADK spring sweep crew, and $5,000 for the Wildlife Conservation
Society’s bear canister project.
Treasurer’s
Report.
With Phil Corell absent Jim reported that there were currently 3,629
active members, and that almost all of the new 46ers have signed up as members. Jim noted that the club is in excellent
financial condition and that in addition to the $8.00 in dues from each member
the club had received over $18,000 in donations this year.
Peeks Editors’ Report.
Co-editor Melissa Eagan put
out a call for more articles and pictures for the magazine.
Trail
Masters’ Report.
Trailmaster Len Grubbs reported that 66 people turned out for
trailwork yesterday on the North Trail to Giant and the trails to Indian Pass
and Wallface Ponds.
He called for others to volunteer noting that the schedule is on the
46er website. Award patches were then
issued to members who contributed the following number of trailwork hours: 46,
146, 346, 546, 746, and 1046.
Outdoor
Leadership Workshop.
Sheri Martin gave a brief
description of the workshop which lasted 2 1/2 days. The participants stayed in
tents or lean-tos and received training in LNT, group outing leadership, food,
geology, history, and trail maintenance.
The workshop is the first weekend in May. All were encouraged to apply, including those
with past experience.
New
46er Book Update.
Tim Tefft announced that he hoped the long awaited book would
be completed in December, and assured everyone that it would be worth the
wait. The book will include historical
profiles of each peak, written by 18 authors.
Grace Peak Committee Update.
Doug Arnold, who continues to spearhead the renaming of East Dix
and South Dix to Grace Peak and Carson Peak respectively, gave an impassioned
overview of Russell Carson and the 46er’s own Grace Hudowalski
(#9), and the importance of renaming the peaks as an educational tool.
Pete Fish, Ranger.
Jim Barnshaw asked retired
Ranger Pete Fish to speak to the group about some concerns he has. Pete, citing the phrase “it is easier
to become a 46er than to be one”, gave a talk that centered on the values
that all 46ers should hold. These
included respect for the environment, dedication to educating hikers and
obeying the rules. He related tales of
improper fires and lack of bear canisters, and commented that the 46ers should
lead by example. The patch is what sets us apart as ‘educators’.
Unfortunately, Pete noted, a few 46ers have argued with Forest Rangers and
suggested that because they were 46ers they were somehow above the rules. Pete
noted that the Forest Rangers have the same enforcement authority as State
Police Officers including the authority to arrest individuals.
Historian’s Office Report and presentation of
certificates.
Tony Solomon prefaced the presentation of the certificates to the
new 46ers by citing a few historical facts. The idea for and the production of
the first certificates was all because of the work of Fred Johnson, #1788. 1995
had the largest number of finishers with 274. The class of 2007, which we
celebrate tonight, had the second largest, with 248. Tony then thanked and introduced all of the
correspondents, and those who worked in the Historian’s Office. Special
tribute was given to Helen Menz (#42) who was present
and introduced to the attendees.
