Annual Spring Business Meeting

May 27, 2007

Lake Placid, NY

 

 

CALL TO ORDER, INTRODUCTIONS, AND ANNOUNCEMENTS 

President Jim Barnshaw called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM and welcomed all, mentioning that with the inductees this evening there were close to 6000 recoded Forty-Sixers. Numerous people were cited for their service: Carol White, our Vice-President for handling ticket sales with close to 400 people attending and Pam and Sherry at the entrance handling any questions/problems for the attendees.  Jim cited past 46R presidents in attendance: Barb Harris, George Sloan, Nancy Allen, Phil Corell, Tim Tefft, Joe Urbanczyk, June Behr, Wally Herrod, and Winnie Lamb. The immediate past president, Mary Lou Recor, who is hiking the Pacific Coast Trail, was acknowledged.

 

Current Executive Committee members were introduced.

 

Special honorable mention was given to Ruth Riford (climber #85; 96 years old), who donated 75 books of her poetry. Dave Martin was thanked for making the books available at the banquet.

 

Jim mentioned the effort to rename East Dix and South Dix Mountains to Grace Peak and Carson Peak, respectively. Doug Arnold continues to spearhead this effort, and a call went out for members to write letters in support of the renaming. 

 

 

Treasurer’s Report. 

Phil Corell announced that sale items were available on the website, with downloadable order forms, and that postal rates were in the process of being updated. The organization received $17,500 in contributions above payment of dues. The following expenditures were cited: Trail sweeps ($6000);  Wildlife Conservation Society ($4500 for bear education); $1736.70 for three radios for summit stewards; Four camperships ($1000).  Clearance items will be available every few years. Special mention was made of a 46R stained glass emblem. Four remain, valued each at $170.  If purchased at the banquet, there would be no postage and the cost would be $158.

 

Peeks Editors’ Report. 

Melissa and Daniel Eagan cited Trudy Healy, and Peeks Magazine’s first newsletter (1960).  They also acknowledged Susanne Lance, who was responsible for taking the magazine to its current level. Finally, they invited the membership to send in their articles, photos, art, and other items for publication.

 

Trail Masters’ Report. 

Jim Coyne, Sam Eddy, Len Grubbs, Pete Hickey.  Len thanked the 58 members who volunteered for this weekend's trailwork assignments to Indian Pass/Wallface Ponds, and the North trail to Giant. Jim Barnshaw announced that new special patches have been developed for members with 546, 746, and 1046 hours of trailwork.  Jim noted that he was honored to give each of these new patches to Len, who has accumulated 2008 hours. Len recognized additional patch recipients for their service.

 

FORTY-SIXER CONSERVATION SERVICE AWARD RECIPIENTS

 

This award is given to volunteers who have accumulated the required number of hours working on trail maintenance projects and to leaders at the annual Outdoor Leadership Workshop. The top three categories were authorized by the Board of Directors in 2006 and presented in 2007 to participants who had already accumulated these hours of service to the Forty-Sixers:

 

  • ONE THOUSAND FORTY SIX HOURS: Len Grubbs, Joe Urbanczyk, Chris M. Behr, June Behr, Larry Hokirk, Bill Johnson, Larry Newman, Pete Hickey

 

  • SEVEN HUNDRED FORTY SIX HOURS: Don Kinnear, Phil Corell, Chris G. Behr

 

  • FIVE HUNDRED FORTY SIX HOURS: Tom Pinkerton, Connie Morrison, Gerhard Weber, Sharp Swan, Bill Embler, Suzanne Lance, Jane O’Connell, Sheri Martin, Tim Tefft, Ed Neveu, Walter Johnson, Marilee Urbanczyk, Sam Eddy

 

  • THREE HUNDRED FORTY SIX HOURS:

 

  • ONE HUNDRED FORTY SIX HOURS: Stan Bischoping, Pat Desbiens

 

  • FORTY SIX HOURS: Bruce Anderson, Julie Chevalier, Matt Elliot, Peggy MacKellar, Robert Rinkoff, Julie Smith

 

Outdoor Leadership Workshop. 

Phil Corell, Don McMullen.  Phil acknowledged current and past leaders. Special mention was given to Tim Tefft and Wally Herrod.  Phil noted that Wally Herrod was responsible for moving the focus of the workshop to that of Leave No Trace.  He was also praised for his emphasis on group leadership and first aid.

 

 

Historian’s Office. 

Tony Solomon welcomed all of the new 46Rs. Honorable mention was given to Helen Menz (#42). Tony also acknowledged Marilee Urbanczyk, who prepares the certificates, and individually cited all of the 46R correspondents, for their hard work. Before the procession of new members, Tony mentioned that there were 221 new members: 158 men, 63 women, 155 from New York State, and 9 from Canada. The youngest was 11, and the oldest was 72. Additional statistics were cited.

 

 

Nominating Committee Report. 

 

Nominations were presented by Nancy Allen for the following positions:

  • President: Jim Barnshaw
  • Vice President: Carol White
  • Director; Wanda Davenport
  • Director: David Dietrich

 

There were no additional nominations from the floor. All nominations were seconded and approved by the membership

 

                

Adjournment. 

Jim Barnshaw thanked the hotel for hosting the event, anounced that the fall meeting will be held at the Keene Central School on October 13, 2007 and then adjourned the meeting.
