Last spring’s melt took down the bridge over the Hudson River crossing to Mt. Allen. Then as it was being repaired Irene showed up, leaving only the metal structure downstream along the river bank. With so much else to do in Irene’s aftermath, the Rangers/DEC had no other option but to hoist and temporarily anchor the metal structure way above high water level so that it could be rebuilt in summer 2012. That is expected to take four weeks. Till then the BRIDGE IS CLOSED.

Shortly before the bridge a sign directs you towards a very low water crossing. Following the heavy rains overnight Thursday (Dec. 15), the above picture shows that it was very dangerous if not impossible to cross: the water was 3 feet plus deep and the current swift. In addition, considering how the planking on Lake Jimmy was damaged by Irene, reaching Allen this coming winter season will be difficult at best.

UPPER WORKS TRAILHEAD UPDATE: On a more positive note, the new section of the Calamity Brook Trail is very scenic and will please backcountry skiers. The first two bridges over Calamity Brook were taken out by this year’s floods and a long-term solution was found. The path now stays west of the brook and rejoins the Indian-Pass –Calamity-Brook Crossover Trail about a quarter-mile from the trail to Flowed Land. It’s now slightly longer as the former 1.6-mile stretch from Upper Works to the now-gone bridge has become an almost 2-mile hike. Not to worry, however, the first mile in (or, if you prefer, the last mile out) is as muddy as ever… even though the 46Rs trail crew recently built (2011) a considerable number of walkways to ease the pain.

By Ken Ryba, #1661W

For the fortieth time the Forty-Sixers’ annual vernal “outdoor skills workshop” (formerly “outdoor leadership workshop”) was held at the ADK’s Adirondack Loj Heart Lake property. Forty-five participants from all over the northeast took part in informative, lively and often entertaining renditions of club member’s experiences in high peak dos and don’ts. Instruction based on a premise of stewardship and love of our mts. was evident at all instruction sessions. Participants were treated to instruction by a dedicated staff of sixteen Forty-Sixers (see list below). Many aspects of high peak safety, regulation and appreciation of the natural attributes afforded to us by Mother Nature were offered. After three days participants walked away with a better understanding of how to enjoy our wilderness and not “love it to death”. Stewardship principles steeped in the “leave no trace” mantra was engrained into every attendees psyche. This educational venture is intended to help ensure a minimum impact by groups of users in the woods. By properly instructing people on how to use, yet minimize the impact on this unique resource, the Forty-Sixers hope to share and contribute to its continued magnificence. I would highly recommend that anyone who spends any time in the woods especially whose who take along a few friends consider joining us next year as a participant. It is a very low key enjoyable but jammed packed weekend that includes a hike to the summit of Mt. Jo., where several of the instructional secessions our held. A wide range of teachings covered during the weekend included: map and compass, food prep., Leave No Trace, route finding, emergency preparedness, group safety, group leadership, DEC regulations, group dynamics, geology, history/folklore, equipment evaluation, nature, organizing an outing club, GPS, fire cooking/baking as well as an overall appreciation of the Adirondacks. Many of our staff members have been with the workshop for many years and can offer a wealth of practical knowledge and experience especially when it comes to taking small groups into the mts. Next year’s forty first annual outdoors skills workshop is scheduled for May 4,5 and 6, 2012. Come join the fun and we hope to see you there!

P.S., A brief history of the forty year evolution of the Forty-Sixer’s workshop can be found starting on page 84 of the new Forty-Sixer’s book Heaven Up-h’isted-ness.

Governor Cuomo arrived this week in Keene Valley to officially reopen route 73 from the Northway to Keene Valley, route 9N between Upper Jay and Keene, and the high peak trails. Trails to Giant and the Garden are open to hikers and interior trails blocked by recent slides have been rerouted. Hopefully the economy of the Adirondack Region can get a needed boost. Consult the DEC website for updated trail information.
