WHAT: an intensive weekend workshop designed to train individuals involved in leading groups on wilderness camping trips.
WHO ATTENDS: the program is designed for leaders of all ages and physical condition. Our intent is for participants to learn by observation and doing within each individual's capabilities.
Topics covered: pre-trip planning and safety; food planning and packaging; campsite organization and safety; meal preparation and safe use of stoves; map and compass; group leadership; wilderness emergencies and how to respond to them; appreciation of the adirondack environment; geologic history of the region; evaluation of proper clothing and equipment; baking in the out-of-doors; hypothermia; the new wilderness ethic; camp leadership training; establishing a campsite; nature, folklore, and history of theadirondacks.

May 9, Dix-Round Pond Blowdown Sweep. We will clear blowdown from the trailhead to the summit of Dix if time and snow conditions permit. If we have a large enough crew, we will also clean water bars along the route. This will be a day trip with work on Saturday only, and we will meet at the trailhead on Route 73 at 7:50 a.m.
May 23 and May 24, Spring Meeting Weekend. On Saturday, we will have one crew clearing vlowdown on the trails to Indian Pass and Wallface Ponds. A second crew will clear blowdown on the North Trail to Giant. We will also clean water bars. On Sunday, we will do trail hardening and side cutting on the Dix-Round Pond Trail. The Indian Pass/Wallface crew will meet on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. at the Camper-Hiker Building (near the Loj). The North trail crew will On Sunday, we will meet at 8:00a.m. in the Keene Valley School parking lot.
June 13, Dix-Elk Lake Blowdown Sweep. We will clear blowdown on the Hunters Pass and Beckhorn trails to the summit of Dix. This will be a day trip with work on Saturday only. We will meet at 7:50 a.m. at the trailhead parking on Elk Lake Road. (off Blue Ridge Road, Northway exit 29).
June 27, Dix-Elk Side Cutting. This will be a day trip to side cut between Slide Brook and the Beckhorn trail junction. We will meet at 7:50 a.m. at the trailhead parking on Elk Lake Road. (off Blue Ridge Road, Northway exit 29).
July 18 and July 19, Trail Hardening, Dix-Round Pond. There are a number of spots that need work so come and join us for some fun in the mud. We will pack in on Saturday and work Saturday and Sunday. We will meet at the trailhead on Route 73 at 7:50a.m.
August 1 and August 2, A Weekend with Darwin. Darwin, our DEC partner, always selects something interesting to keep us challenged. Come and join us on a weekend in the Pharoah Mountain area. Meeting time and place will be communicated, approximately two weeks before the outing, to participants who sign up for this project.
August 15 and August 16, Women's Trail Crew, Dix-Round Pond Trail. This will be a weekend of side cutting on the Dix-Round Pond Trail. We will meet at the trailhead on Route 73 at 7:50a.m..
August 22 and August 23, Putnam Pond or Weekend with Darwin No. 2. This is always a fun weekend. We car camp, put up the big, blue tarp, sit at picnic tables, and eat real food. Darwin will select a project or two in the vicinity. Sign up and we will communicate the specifics to you about two weeks prior to the event.
September 12 and September 13, Street and Nye Trailless Peak Rehabilitation. Evaluation of the work needed on Street and Nye is underway and we anticipate that we will have one or more projects through the approval cycle by September. We will meet at the Hiker/Camper Building (near the Loj) at 7:50 on Saturday. Make sure you sign up so if there are any changes, we can communicate with you.
October 10, Fall meeting
Weekend, Dix-Round Pond Trail. We
will select a project or two, possibly rock work and some side cutting.
